Course summary
OVERVIEW
Why choose this course
Run by internationally recognised academics, our BEng Automotive Engineering courses will give you the expertise needed to become a professional engineer in the automotive industry, or equally provide you with the skillset to take up a career in motorsport.
Students will have access to industry-standard software and equipment, and the prestigious Formula Student competition is a central part of the course. You may also choose to take a Professional Training placement at major companies such as McLaren, Williams F1 and Rolls-Royce.
What you will study
Our unique course explores new and emerging sustainable automotive technologies (such as electric vehicles). Throughout your course, you’ll learn to use state-of-the-art tools for vehicle analysis and development such as computer-aided design, finite element, fluid dynamics and vehicle dynamics software.
You’ll also participate in Formula Student – Europe’s most established student motorsport competition. This is a valuable opportunity to apply your knowledge and gain hands-on experience.
Careers and graduate prospects
We offer careers information, advice and guidance to all students whilst studying with us, which is extended to our alumni for three years after leaving the University.
Our graduate employment record is outstanding. This is due to the professional focus of our courses, accreditation by professional bodies and the quality of our Professional Training placement programme.
Most of our graduates proceed directly to employment in an engineering profession. Typical careers span a wide range of areas including professional automotive engineering, general engineering and manufacturing.
Employers include some of the most famous names in engineering, aerospace, energy, telecommunications and research. A significant number of students also continue their education at Surrey and elsewhere.
Placements
You have the option to complete a Professional Training placement as part of this course. This will give you the opportunity to develop your professional, academic and personal potential, helping to prepare you for your future career.
Foundation
If you don’t meet our entry requirements, you might still be able to apply for this course with a foundation year. A course with a foundation year includes an extra year of study to prepare you for a full degree course.
