Course summary

Overview

This full-time Master’s programme will enable you to work on complex Automotive Systems Engineering problems in order to equip you with the skills required to support working in the modern automotive industry.

The automotive engineering landscape is rapidly changing with the advent of connected and autonomous vehicles. Automotive engineers are now expected to work in interdisciplinary design teams, to develop scalable, multidisciplinary systems models covering all aspects of the product lifecycle from conceptual design of the user interaction, through to verification and validation of designs and systems, and all the way through the operation phases of the system lifecycle.

This programme provides both engineering broadening and deepening by exposing you to a range of automotive engineering and computer science topics to prepare you for a role in industry.

You will have the opportunity to work on interdisciplinary automotive team projects with a focus on systems engineering, and at the same time will gain expertise in a chosen specialist research area as part of your MSc Project.

Learning and assessment

Our teaching strategy begins with the end in mind. We want students to become great engineers; that means great problem solvers, great team-workers with an inquisitive and curious mind. This should mean that by the end of your study with us you can move seamlessly into the world of work, academic research or become an entrepreneur.

Study with us will include formal lectures (including those from Visiting Lecturers), but these will always be interactive and two way. We want to develop your understanding of the vast array of opportunities open to today’s professional engineer and therefore we look to incorporate aspects of real world engineering problems and solutions where possible. To this end we make use of case studies, practical demonstrations, and provide lots of opportunities for you to design your own solutions.

Career prospects

Automotive Systems Engineering is an emerging area with a predicted high demand for specialist engineers working on and around the areas of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Graduates from this course will also be skilled to work within a diverse range of disciplines across transportation and Mechanical Engineering. You can expect to work in industries such as:

  • Automotive
  • Motorsport
  • Aerospace
  • Rail
