Course summary

Tourism and aviation are two of the world’s most exciting industries, particularly in a post-covid era when the public have discovered the value of international travel in their lives. This course provides students with an understanding of the structure, nature and operating characteristics of the international travel industry and is designed to give them the practical experience they need to complement their academic studies.Students learn about contemporary issues such as digital technologies, and sustainability.The course will utilise UWL’s strong industry links, including Heathrow Airport Limited, for example by arranging guest lectures. Throughout the course, the College will deliver a range of management-related modules to support subject specific studies. Students will learn about sales and marketing, legislative frameworks, accounting and finance and managing people, which provides the core knowledge to work successfully within the aviation and tourism business environment.The FdA course aims to develop your ability and knowledge as well as the intellectual, cognitive and transferable skills to be confident leaders, capable of working in a range of roles in the constantly changing aviation and tourism industry. The course seeks develop: • A solid understanding of the tourism and aviation industries and their related sectors• An appreciation and knowledge of the principles and practices of management and the underling functional sectors of business that together provide the foundation for good management practice. • A critical understanding of the principles and methods of working appropriate to being a reflective practitioner in the tourism and aviation industries. • The ability to present justified management solutions and recommendations in a range of appropriate formats. • An ability to meet the future challenges of working within the international tourism and aviation industries. • Aspirations in terms of career development and becoming a leader. • Intellectual skills of analysis, evaluation and interpretation, of problem solving and critical thinking. • Subject practical skills and reflective practitioners with employment capability. • Transferable skills including effective communication, teamwork, independent learning and management of learning.• Encourage the integration of academic study with employment skills.Our graduates seek careers in travel and tourism-related areas such as:• tour operations• hotels and tourist transportation• airport operations• the cruise sector• public sector tourism agencies• International cargo logistics
