Course summary
This course is designed for undergraduate students who wish to pursue a professional engineering career within the aviation sector and aspire to the professional status of Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the Royal Aeronautical Society. The programme is intended to equip graduates with the knowledge, the occupational key skills and desired attributes required in the aircraft maintenance, airworthiness, aviation management, logistics, systems integration, design, support and manufacturing. The school has a heritage of providing graduates to the aviation industry in Greater London, in particular around Heathrow and Gatwick. At level 4, you will acquire the fundamental engineering knowledge and skills building a solid foundation for students to undertake a deeper study at level 5. You will have the opportunity to carry out hands-on practical work in laboratories and workshops throughout the programme. Most modules are designed to develop key employability skills such as communication, presentation, team-working, and planning and project management. At level 5 and 6, you will study the engineering principles underpinning aircraft technologies such as aerodynamics, propulsion, structures and materials science and performance of aircraft. You will study aircraft maintenance operations, aircraft systems, airworthiness and air transport economics.
This course focuses on the key technical and employability skills, and desired attributes required to be a competent aviation engineer. It aligns with the knowledge, skills and behaviours defined in the accreditation of Incorporated Engineering (IEng) programmes by the Royal Aeronautical Society. With the rapid growth of air transport industry, there are strong demands for Incorporated Engineers within the aviation sector. The Aviation Engineering BEng (Hons) graduates are destined to work primarily with airworthiness, aviation management, systems integration, design, support and manufacturing. Employability skills will be developed through a range of aviation and general engineering modules in the programme. Typical job roles are: maintenance and licensed aircraft engineers, certification, quality assurance, logistics, planning, design, technical services, production and control engineers. The typical employers are the civil aviation, the military and aerospace companies.
