Course Information
The BA (Hons) in Costume Construction for Screen and Stage at Coleg y Cymoedd Nantgarw is a full time, three year course, awarded by the University of South Wales
This course introduces students to the study of costume within historical and contemporary context with the acquisition of specialist skills such as pattern cutting, garment construction and surface embellishment.
What Will I Learn?
You will need creative flair and an ability to use your design knowledge and creative skills to interpret ideas. The study of costume within its historical or contemporary context is an integral part of the course and research into period costume will provide reference and aid throughout the interpretative process.
The acquisition of specialist skills such as pattern cutting, garment construction and surface embellishment will equip you with the essential knowledge needed to begin the process of costume construction. Specialist areas such as corsetry and tailoring, will be introduced throughout the course extending and enriching your expertise.
The course will offer you an insight into the professional world of film and theatre with external industrial visits and work placement opportunities across a broad range of film / theatre companies nationwide. This will provide you with the experience of applying skills and knowledge and working both within a team and independently in a professional environment.
Assessment
You will be assessed through completion of assignment based coursework and the observation of practical work.
Career Progression
Employment opportunities exist on a freelance or employee basis within theatre and film companies on completion of this course. The course provides excellent links with industry and opportunities work as part of a production tram in the role of costume maker Previous learners have worked with establishment such as S4C, Mappa Mundi, The Costume Society, and Welsh National Opera as well as Independent Film/Theatre companies.

A level : BCC
You will require one of the following: A Levels with a BCC grade profile, a BTEC Level 3 with a Distinction/Merit/Merit profile, 5 GCSE's at grade C or above including Mathematics and English Language/Welsh, Access to HE (15 Distinctions, 21 Merits, 9 Passes). All applicants will receive a portfolio-based interview.
