Course Information

The BA(Hons) top up Costume Construction course at Coleg y Cymoedd is delivered in partnership with the University of South Wales and is taught at the Nantgarw Campus.

This 1 year top up course is offered to existing students who have successfully completed the Foundation Degree Costume Construction for Screen and Stage. The BA(Hons) top up is also offered to external applicants and entry via this route is through the UCAS application process. The course focuses the final year costume student within the areas of film and theatre. Students enter costume competitions at national level and undertake a specialist area of study within a chosen film or theatre context. There are excellent links with the industry providing opportunities for the costume construction undergraduate to work as part of a production team in the role of the costume maker alongside their study. The course will prepare you with the necessary industry standard skills to become a specialist in the field.

What Will I Learn?

You will need creative flair and an ability to use your design knowledge and creative skills to interpret ideas. The study of costume within its historical or contemporary context is an integral part of the course and research into period costume will provide reference and aid throughout the interpretative process.

The acquisition of specialist skills such as pattern cutting, garment construction and surface embellishment will equip you with the essential knowledge needed to begin the process of costume construction. Specialist areas such as corsetry and tailoring, will be introduced throughout the course extending and enriching your expertise.

The course will offer you an insight into the professional world of film and theatre with external industrial visits and work placement opportunities across a broad range of film / theatre companies nationwide. This will provide you with the experience of applying skills and knowledge and working both within a team and independently in a professional environment.

Assessment

You will be assessed through completion of assignment based coursework and the observation of practical work.

Career Progression

Employment opportunities exist on a freelance or employee basis within theatre and film companies on completion of the Foundation Degree. The optional third year, for an honours degree, will enable you to develop individual specialisms and interests via an individual major project. The third year will also further develop professional knowledge and provide opportunities for you to broaden your portfolio of work.
