Course summary
As the only BFA Dance degree offered in the UK, this innovative four year degree focuses on your development as a dance artist in preparation for a portfolio career in the dance industry. You will develop your creative identity alongside opportunities to extend your potential as a dancer engaging with dance as it is seen and performed in broad multi-cultural and artistic contexts. You will also develop a core understanding of codified dance techniques through classes in Ballet, Cunningham, Graham, Limón, Release and Contact Improvisation and work closely with experienced teachers, professional dancers and choreographers in classes with live music. At the heart of this programme is dance-making, which is underpinned by our internationally recognised research disciplines. The BFA offers a variety of exciting settings for you to engage in dance practice, choreography, improvisation, mediated choreography and dramaturgy. The programme integrates theory and contemporary dance practice so that you can gain knowledge of the philosophical and historical foundations of dance alongside an understanding of somatics and dance science. You will learn how to engage critically with your practice/research in choreography and performance alongside your study of dance in its historical, social, cultural and digital contexts. You will be encouraged to think broadly about dance and to develop and refine your dance practice in our spacious studios, designated screendance facilities and in our well-equipped theatre.Lively student initiatives for extra-curricula dance classes, performances, choreographic platforms and an annual summer dance festival enable students to acquire a broad range of experience and skills alongside their academic programme. There is a popular study abroad option in the second year of the programme and in the fourth year you are encouraged to specialise; learning about curating and producing dance and teaching dance in a variety of settings. The fourth year also includes useful work placement and internship opportunities.
