Course summary

Biochemistry is concerned with all molecular aspects of life, from the synthesis of proteins to the interventions made to treat disease. You will learn about advances at the forefront of international research on the structure-function relationships of biomolecules. You will see how our staff are using state-of-the art structural, spectroscopic and computational approaches to view the molecular machinery of an organism. We provide exciting opportunities throughout the course to develop the necessary skill sets of the modern-day biochemist through tailored laboratory and in silico practicals, and offer final year research projects that allow for real world problems to be investigated.Your education extends beyond the university campus. We support you in expanding your education through offering the opportunity to spend a year studying abroad at one of our partner universities. This four-year version of our degree allows you spend the third year abroad, or employed on a placement abroad, whilst otherwise remaining identical to the three-year course. Studying abroad allows you to experience other cultures and languages, to broaden your degree socially and academically, and to demonstrate to employers that you are mature, adaptable and organised. It's an exciting time to be part of this fascinating area of study. Located in the School of Biological Sciences, we are one of the largest schools at the University. Two-thirds of our research is rated "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" (REF 2014).
