Course summary

Accelerate your career in the biosciences with our four year Biochemistry with Neuroscience Integrated Master's. From understanding the structure-function relationships of the major building blocks of life, to designing and conducting an extended MSci project, you will develop the sophisticated problem-solving, communication, technical, analytical, and research skills that will prepare you for a career in PhD research, industry, or the broader bioscience sector.

Why choose this course?

- Apply key biochemical concepts to the study of the nervous system and understand the molecular basis and treatment of conditions from diabetes to Alzheimer’s- Gain advanced research skills by critically evaluating scientific literature, undertaking an extended year-long research project, formulating a research strategy and producing a grant proposal- Develop hands-on practical skills in our state-of-the-art David Attenborough and Central Science Laboratories- Benefit from a comprehensive programme of academic and professional development workshops to enhance your employability skills- Enhance your communication skills by presenting the outcomes of your research projects in the context of realistic research conferencesOur MSci Biochemistry with Neuroscience programme offers a focused exploration of key biochemistry concepts, ranging from the structure-function relationships of the major building blocks of life, such as nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and proteins, to the regulation and control of metabolic pathways, gene expression, and cellular activity. As you progress through the course you will apply core knowledge of these topics to understanding the structure and function of antibodies, hormones and cell receptors and their roles within multicellular organisms, as well as experimental methods applied in areas of biotechnology and genetic engineering. Alongside study in core areas of Biochemistry you will also study a strand of neuroscience focused modules across all three years of the course, where you apply your knowledge of cellular biochemistry and molecular biology to the study of the nervous system. This will provide you with a strong grounding in key principles of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and neuropharmacology. You will explore how such knowledge from across both disciplines is advancing our understanding of the molecular basis and treatment of conditions ranging from diabetes and cancer, to neuropathologies such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and other disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems. A comprehensive laboratory programmes runs throughout the course utilising our state-of-the-art David Attenborough laboratories, where you will develop key skills in diverse biochemical and molecular biology techniques. Here you will directly apply theoretical knowledge from across the programme and develop skills in experimental study design and optimisation through experiential, enquiry-based learning, culminating in your final year research project.

About Keele

Keele University was established in 1949 by the former Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. Founded to meet the needs of a changing world, Keele has always had a pioneering vision to be a different kind of university. We excel in both teaching and research, with some of the most satisfied students in England, and research that is changing lives for the better at a regional, national and global level. Our beautiful 600-acre campus is one of the biggest in Britain – but all the most important services and facilities are on your doorstep, with accommodation, teaching spaces, facilities including a medical centre, sports centre and pharmacy, and a range of shops, eateries and entertainment venues – including the Students’ Union – clustered around the centre.
