Course summary

The relationship between the subcellular realm and an organism is a delicate and fragile one: tiny changes can have a huge impact which may manifest as disease or system malfunctions. Effective drug treatment requires an understanding of the underlying, normal function of systems in living organisms.Physiology is the study of how organisms work from the subcellular level up to the whole animal. In disease, pathophysiological mechanisms interfere with the function of an organism’s systems. Pharmacology is the study of drug design, drug targets and drug therapies. On this course you will learn how drugs interact with cells and tissues to control disease. This is a rapidly developing field with wide-ranging applications, particularly for medical, plant and veterinary science, where the study of disease requires a good understanding of both the underlying physiology and the relevant pharmacology. On this course you will pay particular attention to cellular communication, neuroscience and cardiovascular science.Physiologists and pharmacologists study these processes in all types of organisms and discover how errors in them can cause disease, and they help discover the impact of microbes across the biological sciences. You will also gain a broad understanding of fundamental biological processes, while developing analytical skills and gaining experience in handling complex information. By studying microbiology in the context of a broad programme of options in other biological sciences, you will be able to apply your knowledge across the boundaries of traditional disciplines and gain a valuable and powerful asset in scientific environments and in many other walks of life.This flexible and broad-based four-year degree allows you to shape your course to focus your study on systems, drug targets and drug discovery and design principles. The first three years are the same as the BSc in Biological Sciences (Physiology and Pharmacology), including the option of a year spent abroad or working in industry. In your final year you will specialise further, upgrading your degree to an MBiolSci (Master of Biological Sciences) and experiencing a seamless transition to specialised higher level study with a focus on physiological and pharmacological research and transferable employability skills.At the University of Leicester, our Biological Sciences degrees are actually seven degrees in one. You can apply for the degree in Biological Sciences (Physiology with Pharmacology) or any of the five specialist degrees listed below. Alternatively you can apply for a general degree in Biological Sciences. Whichever degree programme you choose, your first year will be the same. In the second and third years you will have a choice of modules from across the Biological Sciences portfolio. Selecting particular modules here will steer you towards the specialist degree of your choice. Alternatively you can select modules from across the entire portfolio and graduate with the broad knowledge that comes from a general Biological Sciences degree.All of our Biological Sciences degrees include the option to change your programme, particularly in Year 1 and Year 2, subject to completion of the necessary modules.The other available specialisms are:Biological Sciences (Biochemistry)Biological Sciences (Genetics)Biological Sciences (Microbiology)Biological Sciences (Neuroscience)Biological Sciences (Zoology)Or a general degree in Biological Sciences.Our seven Biological Sciences degrees cover major aspects of biology and molecular sciences across a wide range of organisms from bacteria and fungi to humans and plants.
