Course summary

Zoology includes the behaviour, ecology, conservation and evolution of everything in, and associated with, the animal kingdom, including humans. Zoologists study such processes in all types of organisms and research how they influence behaviour and ecosystems. On the MBiolSci, you will hone your research and laboratory skills and extend your medically specialised BSc programme into a fourth year of masters level study. On the MBiolSci in Biological Sciences (Zoology) you will explore theoretical and practical aspects of animal biology and biodiversity including animal behaviour, development, ecology, evolution and animal physiology. You will gain a comprehensive, up-to-date understanding of the approaches to research in zoology and practical experience of the techniques that zoologists use to tackle some of the most important questions in neurobiology, behaviour, ecology and evolution through analysis of molecular processes. Alongside the fundamental theories of zoology you will learn to understand how whole animal sciences interact with the molecular processes of genetics and biochemistry to govern behaviour, evolution and the interactions of organisms with each other. You will also experience the fun and camaraderie of working and experimenting in the field, in the UK and abroad, whilst learning key subject-specific and employability skills. You will also gain a broad understanding of fundamental biological processes, while developing analytical skills and gaining experience in handling complex information. By studying zoology alongside options in other biological sciences, you will be able to apply your knowledge across the boundaries of traditional disciplines and gain a valuable and powerful asset in scientific environments and in many other walks of life. This flexible and broad-based four-year degree allows you to shape your course to focus your study on how whole organisms behave and interact and what the molecular mechanisms of biological sciences underpin zoology. The first three years are the same as the BSc in Biological Sciences (Zoology), including the option of a year spent abroad or working in industry. In your final year you will specialise further, upgrading your degree to an MBiolSci (Master of Biological Sciences) and experiencing a seamless transition to specialised higher level study with a focus on zoological research and transferable employability skills. At the University of Leicester, our Biological Sciences degrees are actually seven degrees in one. You can apply for this degree in Biological Sciences (Zoology) or any of the five specialist degrees listed below - or a general degree in Biological Sciences. Whichever degree you choose, your first year will be the same and you will have the same choice of modules in your second year and again in your final year. Selecting particular modules in your second and final years will steer you towards one of our specialist degrees (which doesn't have to be the one you originally applied for). Or you can make your own selection of modules in those years and graduate with the broad knowledge that comes from a non-specialised degree. The other available specialisms are:Biological Sciences (Biochemistry)Biological Sciences (Genetics)Biological Sciences (Microbiology)Biological Sciences (Neuroscience)Biological Sciences (Physiology with Pharmacology)Or a general degree in Biological Sciences. Our seven Biological Sciences degrees cover major aspects of biology and molecular sciences across a wide range of organisms from bacteria and fungi to humans and plants. Our four Medical Sciences degrees focus more closely on the application of those biological principles to medicine. There is the possibility of transferring across from our Biological Sciences degrees to our Medical Sci
