Course summary

During the development of a complex adult organism, cells become progressively more specialised. These specialised cells must form in the right place and at the right time. This programme focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that cells use to achieve this. This is a revolutionary area of science. By manipulating and mutating genes, introducing new genes into embryos and suppressing gene expression, scientists are starting to comprehend the way genes control development. This can be exploited for disease therapy or for industrial applications. You will study a range of topics from basic anatomy and embryology to human genetics, sex determination and stem cell biology. We aim to understand the molecular and genetic mechanisms by which the properties of developing organisms are controlled.
