Course summary
Biomedical engineering brings technological innovation to medicine and healthcare, integrating engineering with the human body. From improving understanding how our bodies function and the biomaterials from which we are made, to the design and development of artificial medical implants – hip joints, heart valves and prosthetic limbs - biomedical engineers find creative ways to save and improve the quality of people’s lives. You’ll build a strong foundation in fundamental engineering concepts such as fluid mechanics, design, materials and mathematical modelling, whilst being introduced to Biomedical engineering through our ‘Explore Biomedical Engineering’ module. Modules in design and experimental practice, will help you to develop the practical workshop and laboratory-based skills necessary for all engineers, and put core programme material into perspective and to practical use.In Year 2, a combination of specialist biomedical engineering modules and broader engineering topics will develop your knowledge of relevant biomedical engineering applications linked to some of our own groundbreaking research. You’ll have the option to advance your understanding during Year 3 with modules covering topics such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, medical device design, and medical imaging analysis and robotics. The third-year design project will provide an opportunity for you to concentrate on your specific interests, whilst working on an industry-focused area in collaboration with the School’s world-leading researchers. Students who choose to take the MEng degree will work with research and industry-led teams, and in partnership with clinicians, to solve real-world biomedical engineering research and design problems.
