Learn to use methods and techniques developed in traditional engineering fields, and adapt them to biomedical applications.
- Get involved in internationally leading bioengineering research at a top UK university.
- Work in our state-of-the-art facilities including laboratories for biofluids, mechanobiology, and the leading Organs-on-Chips Centre.
- Professionally accredited by IOM3 (Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining), demonstrating that our curriculum is closely aligned to industry needs.
What you'll study
This programme aims to equip you with the skills to develop new computational and technological products for use in the biomedical industries.
You’ll take compulsory modules on biomedical engineering in urology, and ethics and regulatory affairs. The rest of your programme is determined by the specialism you choose. You'll have the option to choose modules in areas such as electronics, medical robotics, nanotechnology and nanomedicine, sensors and clinical measurements and more.
Your research project forms a major part of your degree. It provides you with an excellent opportunity to take part in internationally-leading research within the School of Engineering and Materials Science, using our excellent facilities.
September 2025 changes
The Biomedical Engineering MSc has undergone structural changes for September 2025 entry and beyond. Core and elective modules have been grouped under four distinct 'pathways', to ensure students can gain the key skills needed for common career paths in bioengineering. The four pathways are:
Pathway A - Clinical Engineering
Pathway B - Biomechanics
Pathway C - Artificial Intelligence and Digital Healthcare
Pathway D - Biomaterials
