OVERVIEW
Why choose this course
Surrey’s School of Biosciences and Medicine achieved 90 per cent overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2019. The University of Surrey has a longstanding reputation for inspiring teaching and pioneering research in the field of biomedical sciences.
What you will study
Our fully-accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course has been developed to allow you the option of pursuing a career as a registered biomedical scientist in the healthcare sector, as it satisfies the requirements of the Institute of Biomedical Science. This is in addition to the many other career options open to students graduating from this course.
In your first year, you’ll develop a broad range of skills that give you an excellent foundation on which you can build across the rest of your course. The modular structure of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes allows you to pursue the subjects essential to your qualification while also giving you the flexibility to study other topics that interest you.
Careers and graduate prospects
We offer careers information, advice and guidance to all students whilst studying with us, which is extended to our alumni for three years after leaving the University.
Biomedical science graduates can follow a number of diverse career paths.
Our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science courses are in-depth science degrees, which can lead to further study and research for a higher degree. We developed the course to allow you to obtain a professional qualification that will enable you to successfully pursue a career as a biomedical scientist in the NHS, a path that now offers excellent career prospects.
In addition, some of our previous graduates have pursued a medical career by applying for entrance onto a medical programme.
Graduates have typically gone on to become, for example, postgraduate researchers or biomedical scientists within the NHS. Many have entered the related pharmaceutical industry, and some have gained entry to medical and dental courses.
Assessment
We assess modules individually and award credits for the successful completion of each one. Assessment takes place through a combination of examination and/or coursework, practical examinations and reports.
