Course summary

This unique opportunity is designed to equip pharmaceutical professionals with an integrated understanding of the emerging class of medicine that is; biopharmaceuticals.You will learn how all aspects of biological drug development fit together (discovery to commercialisation). The focus will be on large molecule drugs: monoclonal antibodies like Herceptin, bio-similars and antibody-drug conjugates; gene therapies and the technologies that underpin the discovery and development pathway. You will be working alongside like-minded professionals and will have the opportunity to test your skills through various assessment routes such as: team project work, presentations and reports. You will have access to cutting-edge practical technologies in a world-leading Life Science Faculty and experience hands-on practical training in protein purification, characterisation, formulation and assessment of binding function. In addition, you’ll use cell-based assays to look at drug potency, all performed in a strict regulated environment.

The programme will provide you with a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the industrial pathway of biological drug discovery, development and exploitation. Your training will focus on the development of specialist technical skills and theoretical knowledge required to work in the biologics industry and apply this training in a regulatory environment. On completion of the programme, you will be prepared to take up a range of biologics medicine development roles in a biotechnology, contract manufacturing, contract research organisation or pharmaceutical company globally and enhance the value you add to your organisation with immediate effect.
