Research overview

Masters by Research (MRes) programmes allow students to undertake a substantial amount of independent research while gaining 20 credits in transferable skills training.

Given the broad range of interests of the academic staff, it is possible to conduct a research project in most areas of biotechnology and bioenergy; the project should be developed in discussion with the identified academic supervisor/s. The programmes are flexible in nature and allow students to take some additional accredited taught credits, in consultation with their supervisor.

Research facilities

The BBSRC/EPSRC Synthetic Biology Research Centre (SBRC) is the focus of Synthetic Biology and Industrial Biotechnology at the University and explores the production of chemicals and fuels from sustainable feedstocks that include both 1-carbon greenhouse gases (CO and CO2) as well as plant biomass-derived sugars.

The SBRC house large cohorts of PhD studentships, has many international research and industry connections and possess a wealth of dedicated equipment and bespoke facilities. The latter include comprehensive analytical equipment, extensive fermentation suites and a £1.1m robot for automated high throughput assembly and analysis of engineered process organisms.
