Course summary

Course Overview:

We work in partnership with Letterkenny Institute of Technology to deliver the BSc (Hons) Early Childhood, Care, Health and Education Top Up for those who already hold a Level 5 qualification in Early Years. Entry onto the degree programme will be at Year 3 of the four-year programme. Students will develop the skills necessary to assimilate an understanding of the complex and diverse nature of the subject, as well as more general skills which will be widely transferable.

Students will become familiar with the Republic of Ireland curriculum developments and implement Aistear: the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework and Síolta, the National Quality Framework for Early Childhood in their placement, which can be in either Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. Students will undertake a critical examination of contrasting perspectives which provide insight into the varied experiences of early years’ settings. As work placement is an integral part of your qualification a self-declaration of current health status is implicit as part of the overall risk assessment process.

You can progress to the following: Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE), Nursing, Social Work Educational Psychology, Masters in Early Years. Previous students have set up their own crèche / day care business or worked in the field of Early Years as a Special Needs Assistant, Nursery Assistant, Classroom Assistant or Childminder.

Work placement provides students with an opportunity to learn from experience through supervised practice and provides the student with opportunities for observation and engagement in needs assessment, early childhood curriculum planning and implementation.
