Course summary
Course Details
This course has a strong vocational focus and will develop key skills in economics, accounting and management. You will explore the principles of economics and how they apply to business, and you will gain both a theoretical and practical understanding of the economic decisions faced by business managers. You will also develop the ability to analyse the economic and social environments in which those decisions are taken.
This course offers the opportunity to take a 'sandwich' year - a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.
Course Benefits
You will be encouraged to seek a year's paid work placement in the third year of your course to hone your skills and get a head start in the employment market. Past placement companies have included Mercedes Benz, Price Waterhouse Cooper and high street retail banks. We have a dedicated employability and placements office to support you and provide you with access to a wide range of vacancies from local, national and international employers. Pre-placement guidance and seminars are available on topics such as CV and letter writing, how to succeed at interview, assessment centres and psychometric tests.
You will meet representatives from organisations such as Deloitte and take part in our Virtual Investment Club to gain a greater understanding of how financial markets work. There is also the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in year two at venues around the world.
We're dedicated to supporting your professional development - that's why we offer a guest lecture programme. Past speakers include the CEO of the London Stock Exchange, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, past Chair and President of the Academy of Marketing, Chief Executive of the British Bankers Association, the Chief Economist of Yorkshire Bank and the Editor of Cosmopolitan.
Job Prospects
You will possess the skills and knowledge essential for a career as an economist, or you could enter another area of business such as management or accountancy. You will be primed for a trainee management position or company graduate programme that will put you on the fast track to a leadership role. Our graduates are working in industries as diverse as banking and car manufacturing.
