Course summary
Overview
Legal issues permeate all aspects of work in the contemporary world, and increasingly organisations are held to account for their actions. There is a need for graduates who understand the legal needs of a business or organisation.
Our emphasis is on developing key skills and preparing you for an attractive range of graduate careers. Recent graduates have secured roles with Bloomberg LP in New York and Eversheds Sutherland, a global top 15 law practice. Graduates have also gone on to work in roles such as government administrator, project support analyst, and project manager.
In the first year you will study core modules to deepen your understanding of the business landscape and legal disciplines, with the chance to choose from a wide range of optional modules to tailor your learning in your second and third years.
You can also take part in a host of co-curricular and extracurricular events and activities, such as mooting and client interviewing, to hone your practical and professional competences.
This course is not a qualifying law degree and does not exempt you from the academic stage of legal training for the Law Society and Bar Council. However, at the end of year one it may be possible to transfer to the Law LLB, which is a qualifying law degree course.
Teaching and assessment
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports) and usually an exam or test, which is typically weighted as follows in your first year:
- Exam: 54%
- Coursework: 46%
These assessment weightings are indicative only. The exact weighting may vary depending on option modules chosen by students and teaching methods deployed by the academic member of staff each year. Indicative assessment weighting and assessment type per module are shown as part of the module information. Again these are based on the current academic session.
Graduate careers
A degree in Business Management and Law opens up a wide range of career opportunities as you develop a broad base of skills that are in great demand with employers. Our varied selection of modules within the degree programme offer insight into many disciplines and potential career paths.
Recent graduates have taken up roles such as legal associate at Barratt Developments PLC, case worker at the Ministry of Justice, investigation support assistant for Leicestershire Police, and prosecution manager for Arriva Rail North.
