Course summary

Undertake research that offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on strategies to detect and treat cancer with our Cancer Biology programme. You’ll explore the application of molecular and/or computational approaches to the study of cancer mechanisms and examine treatment strategies that impact upon medicine and ultimately patient outcomes.IntroductionThe Institute of Systems, Molecular and Integrative Biology (ISMIB) was established to integrate cutting-edge and clinical research across the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Programmes of work across ISMIB are varied and are led by world experts in their fields. Our research spans a magnitude of scales, from single molecules and simple molecular pathways through to whole organisms and the complex integration of molecular pathways. Cutting-edge and world-leading multiomics technologies are used by our researchers to answer impactful biological real-world questions related to health and disease.Fundamental cancer research is aimed at providing the discoveries that can lead to new avenues of research and are ultimately translated into patient benefits. Scientific laboratory research in the Department of Molecular and Clinical Cancer Medicine is performed in an environment that has a wealth of clinical expertise and research. This ensures that scientific research is always provided by leading clinical teams, informed by an awareness of detailed clinical issues, and performed with insights of relevance to patients.Research topicsWe offer translational research and tumour-specific research in many areas including:Pancreatic cancerColorectal cancerHaemato-oncologyHead and neck cancerLiver cancerLung cancerGastro-oesophageal cancerBrain cancerBreast cancer.Research themes include:Early detection, screening and diagnosis of cancersCancer vulnerabilities, novel therapeutics and therapy response markersTumour-stroma-immune interactionsCell-signalling, membrane to nucleus.
