Course summary

Overview

This Certificate in Higher Education offers the highest level of qualification for professional tour guiding currently available in Northern Ireland and is only available at Belfastmet. This course is validated by Ulster University and has been developed alongside Tourism NI and the professional association, Tour Guides NI, in response to tourist industry demands for professionally qualified tour guides. This qualification focusses on the development of the higher level skills that are required for professional tour guiding practice. It includes the assessment of tour group management on walking and moving vehicle tours within a city and across a wider regional / cross county / cross-border context. Modules within this course explore a range of topics which the professional tour guide would be expected to know about such as: history, coast & country and contemporary tourism issues. There is also a module that investigates important aspects of the business of tour guiding.

This qualification is delivered on a part-time basis, one day a week, over 3 semesters (18 months). It is in high demand and there are limited places so early application is advised. It is delivered and assessed in English and successful applicants will need a good command of the English Language to be able to complete all assessments. Applicants are advised that elements of this course can be physically demanding to include compulsory walking tours that can last more than four hours. It also involves the assessment of safe tour group management on a moving vehicle. Students may also be required to contribute towards the cost of attending educational / familiarisation trips or visits as part of this programme.

How will I be assessed?

This is a higher level, academic and professional qualification and a wide range of assessment methods will be used to include practical and written assessments, presentations, group and individual research, reflective practice and evidence of continuous professional development.
