Research overview

Chemical engineering is the application of physical and life sciences, with mathematics to produce, transform, transport and effectively use chemicals, materials and energy.

Research facilities

There are extensive laboratories with equipment from bench to pilot-plant scale. We are one of the few faculties in the UK with access to mass spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy and a ‘virtual-reality’ suite where you can construct and optimise your own complete processing plant.

Postgraduate students also have access to research facilities including a range of equipment, for example:

  • total organic carbon
  • strong acid digestion of rocks
  • research test rigs – multiphase flow
  • drop tube furnace
  • flow in pipe rig
  • microwave centre
