Course description

On our Chemistry MSc, you'll have the freedom to choose from a wide-range of cutting-edge lecture modules across organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry. Current topics range from catalysis and the chemistry of light to theoretical chemistry and technologies for sustainability.

In the lab, our researchers will teach you advanced research skills and you’ll spend one-third of your time working on your own research project. You’ll choose a research area to focus on and you’ll be based in one of our world-class research groups, developing skills and expertise that can help you stand out in the graduate job market.

Assessment

Our assessment methods are designed to support the achievement of learning outcomes and develop your professional skills. This includes coursework, laboratory reports, a dissertation and a viva.

Regular feedback is also provided, so you can understand your own development throughout the course.

Your career

Graduates from this programme frequently find a job in industry. Some of the major employers of Sheffield chemistry graduates are consumer goods firms such as Unilever and Reckitt, where chemists make many of the products you see on supermarket shelves, and pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca and GSK, where chemists develop novel medications.

Our graduates also synthesise the products and materials behind industrial-scale manufacturing, going onto roles at chemical companies such as Croda and Dow Chemicals.

This course is also a great preparation for a PhD in chemistry. Sheffield chemistry graduates have secured postgraduate research positions at many of the world's top 100 universities.
