Course summary

Our Chemistry with Materials Chemistry BSc combines the principles of chemistry with the study of materials and their real-world, practical applications in tackling global challenges, such as energy security. From discovering frontier topics guided by our world-leading researchers to applying key concepts in our sector-leading laboratories, you will develop the practical and professional skills - including data fluency and materials design - to pursue a career in the chemical and allied industries, as well as sectors outside physical sciences.

Semiconductors, batteries, fuel cells and catalysts are essential to our green transition and net zero ambitions, by allowing us to transport, convert, deliver and conserve energy in all aspects of our industrial society. At the intersection of Chemistry and Materials Science, our Chemistry with Materials Chemistry BSc provides you with an in-depth understanding of the fundamental theory and practical applications of such materials. While continuing to develop a strong grounding in core chemistry, you will apply your understanding and skills to the modern problems at the forefront of materials science, gaining the conceptual and practical competencies needed to enable a sustainable future. During your studies you will have opportunities for individual advanced project work, collaborative learning, placements, and exploration of frontier topics - guided by our world-leading researchers.

During the first two years of your studies, you will explore core concepts in the fundamental areas of inorganic, organic, physical and analytical chemistry. Your learning will be supported through interactive teaching, workshops and small group activities as well as frequent opportunities to apply key concepts in our sector-leading laboratories - where you will gain individual, practical confidence using specialist computational tools and research-grade instrumentation. Throughout your studies you can tailor your learning by choosing from a variety of optional modules - including some at the forefront of modern chemical sciences research.

Your understanding and skills will be assessed through a diverse range of authentic activities which will develop your specialist and transferrable skills to prepare you for your future career.

You will graduate with a depth and breadth of fundamental and applied knowledge from across chemistry and relevant topics in materials science, a strong grounding in laboratory techniques and an understanding of the intersection of chemistry and materials chemistry with sustainability, ethical practices and wider societal challenges.

Graduates of this programme may enter a wide range of professions, both in and out of the laboratory. You may also further your knowledge by undertaking further study at Master's level.
