Course summary

This is a balanced course that develops your Chinese language skills and your historical knowledge. The list of history modules are designed to complement your Chinese studies. They cover various political, social and cultural themes. You will also spend part of your degree studying in China, immersing yourself in Chinese society.


Through the study of history, gain the critical foundations for understanding how Chinese culture has changed and developed over time - while gaining advanced language skills.

Choose from a variety of history modules that complement your Chinese studies, covering political, social and cultural themes, and engage with real research from the beginning of your course. Develop the skills of historical research, independent judgement, critiquing accepted opinions and constructing your own effective arguments.You’ll undertake intensive language teaching with the opportunity to put into practise your Chinese during a year at one of our partner universities in mainland China or Taiwan. Returning to Sheffield for your final year you’ll refine your language skills, deepen your understanding through research-led modules and complete a dissertation project of your choice supervised by world-leading researchers.Through this degree, you’ll not only explore China’s past, but also anticipate how past developments will drive events in the future.
