Course summary

Course Details

Civil engineering is a rewarding profession with engineers increasingly working in multidisciplinary teams. This practical course will ensure you have the technical and management capabilities to contribute effectively in a wide range of environments.

Your course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year, should you choose to take one. You will also be supported in recording your initial professional development for membership of the accrediting institutions.

This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

Accredited IEng (Full)

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

Course Benefits

The course team will help you secure work placements during the summer and your sandwich year. This provides you with a great opportunity to gain practical experience in the workplace, which will help you apply for jobs when you graduate.

You will also be supported in recording your initial professional development for membership of the accrediting institutions.

To broaden your industry knowledge, the course team also arrange regular personal development sessions. These are generally provided by leading industry professionals and will assist you in choosing an appropriate area of civil engineering to enter on graduation. We also have close links with the Institution of Civil Engineers and host a number of regional events for you to attend.

Job Prospects

As a graduate engineer, you could work for consultants, contractors, local authorities or government agencies. You will be able to contribute to the design, construction and maintenance of a variety of infrastructure projects. You could also specialise in areas such as structures, transportation, water supply and treatment or power generation and supply. Should you want to further your studies, you could progress on to an accredited technical postgraduate course.
