Course summary

This Classical Civilisation and French degree, with a year abroad, enables a deep exploration of Greek and Roman mythology, history and society, alongside study of French language, culture and fiction. During your year in France, you will either study at a university, teach in a school or work in a business.Your focus will traverse major periods of time and diverse subject matter: from the emergence of Athenian democracy to the unique cultural environment of Paris and its evolution to the present day.Classical Civilisation was ranked in the Top-10 Guardian University Guide 2018. Some 94% of graduates are employed or in further study within 6 months after graduating (DLHE 2015) and 70% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18. This degree provide graduates with a wealth of career opportunities thanks to numerous transferable skills which employers value highly.Early modules offer a wide subject choice, allowing in depth study of ancient Greek and Roman worlds alongside French language and culture. This range gives you a great chance to learn, discover and narrow your interests.Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will have the freedom to tailor your degree according to your specialist interests as you progress.Later studies may be shaped by work placement projects and further teaching experience can be developed by leading workshops for the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership.Students typically develop oral and writing skills through presenting ideas in different formats, supported by strong research and analysis. Forms of assessment include essay, coursework and examination, presentations and a dissertation. Teaching is informed by a vibrant and supportive research environment that unites academics, postgraduates and visiting scholars around shared subject matter.“I was fortunate to spend a year as a teaching assistant in Nice, living with a local family. I thoroughly enjoyed my year abroad and cannot emphasise enough the benefits to be gained. Studying a foreign language opens the door to a whole world of new possibilities, and their value in the jobs market shouldn't be underestimated.” – Sophie Williams.A year abroad enriches your study experience and boosts your career prospects.
