Course summary

Studying a Classical Civilisation degree offers a deep exploration of Greek and Roman mythology, history and society, alongside the arts and languages of Greek and Latin. Our three-year BA Classical Civilisation degree helps to provide graduates with a wealth of inspiring career opportunities thanks to numerous transferable skills which are valued highly by employers. This subject area is ranked in the top 10 Guardian University Guide 2018 National Student Survey. Some 94% of graduates are employed or in further study 6 months after graduating (Destination of Leavers from HE survey 2015) and 70% of our students achieved a 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in 2017/18.An intellectually rigorous programme, this degree is built around compulsory and optional modules. Your initial studies will focus on Greek mythology, languages and ancient philosophy. But whether your true passion lies in Roman love poetry, Greek romance, the armies and enemies of imperial Rome, or gender in the Roman world, our extensive first year modules have it covered. This range gives you scope to learn, discover and narrow your interests.Based on our stunning Singleton Park campus overlooking Swansea Bay on the edge of the Gower Peninsula, you will have the freedom to tailor your degree according to your specialist interests as you progress.During the second year you have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong or Singapore. Later studies are shaped by more advanced language modules, special interest modules and the ‘Literacy through Latin’ work placement project, teaching Latin to school children. Further teaching experience can be developed by leading workshops for the South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership.Classical Civilisation students typically develop oral and writing skills through presenting ideas in different formats, supported by strong research and analysis.
