Course summary
Study the Master's by Research in Classics and Ancient History and choose from a wide range of specialist areas.
Course Overview
Two routes are available:
Route A completion of a 40000 words dissertation.
Route B 2 x 5000 word essays; 25000 word dissertation + language training.
For both routes training in research methods as well as in ancient Greek or Latin are provided. We also run an academic German class and reading groups on specific topics.
Areas for MAR supervision
The Department offers expertise in a wide range of research areas including Epigraphy; Numismatics; Visual and Material Culture; Art; Ancient Medicine; Ancient Athletics; Greek Social and Cultural History; Sexuality and Gender; Ancient Rhetoric; Augustus and the Early Principate; Greek Religion and Greek Sanctuaries; Greek theatre; Greek Literature especially lyric poetry; Greek Political History; Latin literature (Republican and Imperial poetry and prose); the ancient novel; Geography and space in Greek and Latin literature; Classics and Theory; Roman philosophy; Reception of Greek Thought in Arabic Culture; Platonism in the Renaissance; Roman cultural history; Roman Economy; Roman Syria; Sicily and North Africa; The Western Mediterranean.
Teaching and Learning
Seminars introducing students to research methods are included in Term 1. Training in ancient Greek Latin or academic German is also provided as required.
