Course summary

Classics involves the study of the literature, history, art and material culture of ancient Greece and Rome. Study of Latin and/or Greek language is possible at any level.If you progress to Honours you will have the opportunity to spend at least three weeks (usually during the summer vacation after year 3) visiting archaeological sites and museums in Italy and Greece. Financial support for this visit is available to all Single Honours students. You may also spend year 3 studying at universities in North America, Australia, New Zealand or Europe." You will study classical civilisation, covering the history, literature and culture of archaic Greece and republican Rome. You will read Homer alongside the histories of Herodotus and Sallust, the plays of Plautus and the speeches of Cicero. You will study the literature, culture, history and politics of democratic Athens and of the Roman Empire at its height. You will read plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes a dialogue by Plato the histories of Thucydides and Tacitus the Aeneid of Virgil the satirical writings of Juvenal and Petronius’ extraordinary novel. You can now take any of the pre-Honours Classical Civilisation courses (1A, 1B, 2A, 2B) in an online format as an alternative to the traditional face-to-face courses, for greater flexibility.In recent years our graduates have found employment as: teachers, civil servants, administrators, librarians, archivists, experts in museums and galleries.
