Course summary

Overview

The Clinical Research MRes is a multi-disciplinary course aimed at practitioners who wish to develop their clinical or academic research careers. The course seeks to enhance the skills and knowledge needed for supporting, delivering and integrating research into clinical practice, as well as fostering evidence-based practice. Practitioners with the appropriate innovation and critical-thinking skills may be supported to undertake further study at MPhil/PhD level with the aim of developing a future clinical academic career.

Course detail

Our MRes programme is flexible, allowing for full- or part-time study. There is also the option of completing a PG Certificate in Clinical Research. New funding offered by the HEE/NIHR Pre-doctoral Clinical Academic Fellowship scheme has made this a more popular choice among students. Although you need to apply directly to the NIHR for this funding, we can support you with your application. Additional support is available to Practitioners with the appropriate innovation and critical-thinking skills to develop a future clinical academic career. The purpose of this taught programme is to develop students’ knowledge and research skills to enhance their current and future careers in supporting, delivering and integrating research into clinical practice, and fostering evidence-based practice.

Teaching and assessment

We will use a delivery method that will ensure students have a rich, exciting experience from the start. Face to face online/in-person teaching will be complemented and supported with digital education technologies so that students experience digital learning and assessment. Your performance will be assessed through a combination of coursework and written/practical examinations. Forms of assessment may typically include written assignments such as essays and portfolios. The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. However, they may change if the course modules change. There will be a variety of assessment tasks, depending on the optional modules you select. These can include coursework, exams and other written assignments such as essays and portfolios. Your course also includes a dissertation in clinical research. As well as attending seminars, lectures, workshops and tutorials, you will also need to spend time on independent study.

Career prospects

Graduates from this course go on to develop a research or a clinical-academic career or move into a senior leadership role. Students can also exit with a PGCert award.
