Course summary

The BA Comparative Literature with integrated foundation year combines a three-year degree in Comparative Literture with a bespoke foundation year, providing a pathway for students not currently eligible for entry to a three year degree programme. The subject content and teaching methodology employed in the foundation year (Year 0) builds a skills set and provides a platform for successful participation over the remainder of the programme. It will include modules in Study Skills as well as an independent study project. There are two specific literature modules which provide an introduction to English and American Literature. After successful completion of the Foundation Year, students will progress onto Level 4 (Year 1) of their degree. A group of programmes will be available to progress onto which will be relevant to this foundation year. A list of permitted programmes in each group will be made available each year. Years 1, 2 and 3 provide a deeper focus on Comparative Literature specific modules. Comparative Literature is about making comparisons – and connections – between challenging themes and motifs in different literatures and cultures. As well as having the opportunity to study a range of genres, time periods, and national literatures (all of which can be studied in translation), you can cross nationalities and even time periods. You could also examine links between literature and a whole range of other art forms: such as music; film; popular culture and visual arts. Comparative Literature at Queen Mary is about choice and flexibility: you can select from a wide range of modules, including some creative options such as script-writing. It is also about breadth of approach and keeping an open mind.
