Course summary

Computer simulation is an increasingly important field within engineering. Virtual prototyping, based on the numerical analysis of structures, fluids and many other disciplines, has become central to the industrial design and analysis process.

This MSc programme is for students with maths, physics, computing or engineering backgrounds, who want to forge careers in the fast-growing field. You can tailor your degree to build on your experience, choosing modules that reflect your interests and chosen specialism.

What you'll study

On this course, you’ll be supported to acquire advanced skills in the computational modelling of structures and fluids. You’ll also be introduced to programming and numerical algorithms. A particular strength of this course is its broad teaching of numerical optimisation, a topic of significant industrial interest.

You can choose to specialise in either aeronautical, mechanical, chemical or sustainable energy engineering, by taking advanced modules in that field.

You’ll then apply your numerical analysis skills to an engineering problem in your specialism, in order to complete your MSc project. You’ll be supervised by one of our research staff and have access to our excellent facilities to carry out your work.

We benefit from generous research funding, and have strong links with companies such as Airbus, Alstom and Rolls Royce.

Teaching

You’ll be taught by staff with a wide variety of industry and research experience in areas such as nuclear reactors, renewable energy, computational fluids, thermal energy and digital twins. Staff are fellows and members of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Aeronautical Society, The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and The Royal Society.
