Course summary
The Masters in Computational Geoscience explores how we model the natural world and the environment around us (and the processes that create them). You will develop applied data science and modelling skills which you can use to address complex real-world challenges and support decision-making in geoscience fields. You will develop skills that are in high-demand in the geoscience sector, including computer programming, predictive modelling and big data analysis.
WHY THIS PROGRAMME
This programme is one of very few in the UK to focus on computational modelling in geosciences and is unique to Scotland.
If you are from a science or engineering background and are looking to develop and apply data science skills within the geosciences sector but have little or no academic background in geographical and earth sciences, this programme is designed for you.
The programme is highly-applied and has been developed in consultation with industry to ensure our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills to meet global demands for professionals in this field.
Our research-led teaching is delivered by academics at the forefront of debates in geomorphology, geomagnetism, geophysics, plate tectonics, and structural and reservoir modelling within the earth systems science field.
You will learn to solve specific applied questions using a range of coding languages including Python.
You will benefit from access to our extensive computer laboratories and the latest software packages.
Project work and continuous assessment will also help you to develop professional skills, including project management, communication, and presentation skills.
The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences has an Athena Swan Silver Award, demonstrating the school's commitment to supporting women in scientific studies and careers and improving the working environment for all.
CAREER PROSPECTS
This programme will provide students with the knowledge and skills to work in the geoscience field at the interface between computational modelling and geoscience professionals.
This includes areas such as geothermal, carbon capture, energy and metals industries, earth system modelling, flood and landscape modelling, and environmental consulting and Protection.
The MSc will also prepare students for PhD study in a multitude of earth science research fields.
