Course summary

This course is an exciting, challenging and dynamic field. Computers form an integral part of every aspect of society and modern life. New computing technologies are introduced at an exponential rate and as a result the computer science discipline is continually developing to meet with these ever increasing rapid changes. The demand for graduates with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to analyse, design, develop, test and maintain computer systems is extremely high. Organisations rely on computers for problem solving as well as processing and analysing data. Consequently industry requires specialists to create, understand and further advance the computer science discipline. This degree will look at computer science as the core of the underlying technologies that are increasingly infiltrating every element of our society. Employability skills are at the heart of our computer courses including team working, project management, communication and creative thinking. This degree aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills required to work as a computing professional and/or consultant in the design, configuration and management of computer systems. The main focus is on the more technical aspects and underlying principles of computer systems. During the course you will work on practical design projects, laboratory activities and group project work. You will become familiar with industrial practice and software to analyse and simulate computer systems. You will also have the opportunity of working on a live work-based project during your second year, which will allow you to apply your academic knowledge and interpersonal skills in a real-world environment.

Assessment methods include practical assessments, reports and essays, analysis of case studies, oral presentations and debates, seminar papers, project work, personal development portfolio, examinations and unseen class tests. Assessment will involve both individual and group/team-based assignments. In the specialist security modules, students will be able to get hands-on experience of practical assessment that will see them configuring a range of computer systems and going through the processes of penetration testing and ethical hacking. The Careers & Zone at Wrexham Glyndŵr University is there to help you make decisions and plan the next steps towards a bright future. From finding work or further study to working out your interests, skills and aspirations, they can provide you with the expert information, advice and guidance you need. Our degree will enable you to work with large employers in software industries, in technology SMEs and help your career development towards managerial positions in software organisations or as a company director of your own business.
