Overview

The Computer Science MSc programme has been designed to provide students with a non-computer science first degree, with the necessary technical knowledge and skills required to take up rewarding careers within the computer science industry, including interdisciplinary career opportunities.

The programme will allow students to build on their existing undergraduate degrees, and upskill their portfolio of abilities, in the context of current thinking in the domain of computer science.

More specifically, the programme will provide students with a comprehensive insight into the modern computer science landscape and augment this insight with selected specialised knowledge with a focus artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

Why study this subject?

On completion of the programme, you should have a good understanding of the domain of computer science and the current practice of computer science. You will have gained a systematic insight into the current theory and practice and brought your understanding of the subject matter up-to-date relevant to your first degree or profession.

During your studies, you will develop your ability to work independently, and with others, to research, design, implement and execute creative computer science solutions to practical and commercial problems, and to subject your work and that of others to critical analysis and evaluation.

You will also have an opportunity to create a professional development plan and, throughout the course of the programme, build an e-portfolio that exhibits your understanding of computer science and the practical application of computer science technology.

Teaching methods and style

This programme is designed to be studied wholly online and part-time. Teaching is delivered through our state-of-the-art Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which provides students with access to all resources required for interactive study online. On this platform you will be encouraged to work collaboratively with classmates and actively read around your topic through our comprehensive library of ebooks and journals.

Methods of assessment

Assessment is exclusively through online activities carried out in the VLE rather than examinations. You will be assessed through a range of activities, including discussion forum participation, practical assessment and group work.

Career destinations

Organisations across the computer science sector, both commercial and non-commercial, are experiencing a significant recruitment challenge. Employment opportunities within computer science far outstrip the supply of qualified computer science graduates.

The Computer Science MSc programme will address this skills gap by providing graduates with employment opportunities across the sector with a particular focus on, but not limited to, career opportunities within specialist areas of computer science, including interdisciplinary opportunities by coupling knowledge of computer science with the knowledge that graduates have acquired from their first degree.

Job opportunities are wide and varied; examples include: Software Engineer, Machine Learning Practitioner, Big Data Analyst, Network Administrator, Database Manager and IT consultant.
