Computer science incorporates a number of specialist areas underpinning the digital technologies we use every day. Our course is taught by leading researchers who are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in this rapidly changing field to ensure you're up to date with the latest developments.You'll learn the main areas of the discipline, including software engineering, Artificial Intelligence, information security and data analytics, as well as computer systems, databases and networks.In addition to the technical knowledge you'll need to pursue a career in this field, you'll learn about the impact of technology on individuals, organisations and society. With a work-based learning module embedded within the course, you'll also have the chance to develop your skills in the workplace and enhance your CV. At the University of East London we have BCS Accreditation, Microsoft IT Academy and CompTIA Academy status, so your qualification will be recognised and valued anywhere in the IT sector.Throughout the course you'll be encouraged to apply your skills to a range of practical problems. In your first year, you'll gain a solid grounding in computer science fundamentals, including information systems modelling and design, software development, networks, web technologies and mathematics tailored to computing.In your second year you'll learn about databases, web and mobile applications development, and data structures, and will complete a 70 hour work placement.For your final year you'll have the chance to specialise in areas such as mobile application development, network security, distributed systems and artificial intelligence.You'll be encouraged and supported to find work experience to enhance your practical skills, and we'll help you to find a work placement if you choose to work for a year in the industry during your course.In addition to your practical skills, you'll learn about the social and cultural implications of the digital revolution, gaining an understanding of professional and ethical issues in computer science.
