Course summary

Course Overview

Interested in all areas of computing? Not sure which area to specialise in? This course offers a broad training in a variety of IT disciplines and is designed to prepare students for a range of computing positions. If you have strong problem-solving skills and a mind for critical thinking, then a career in computing could be for you.

Working to the standards of Microsoft and Cisco

Throughout this course you will develop significant practical skills, balancing theory with work-related experience. We place a lot of emphasis on industry standards from Microsoft and Cisco, making graduates more desirable to employers seeking computer literate staff.

Understand the diversity of computing

You’ll discover and master IT applications and programming basics as well as networks and web development. We carry out regular and varied assessment tasks, often directly related to industry-relevant problems and during the second year you’ll take on a work-related project. This is an opportunity for students to seek live briefs from clients such as charities, local organisations or within other departments of the University.

This course provides graduates with a strong footing for a career in the IT industry and a great taste of all areas of computing. On completion of the course, graduates have the opportunity to develop their expertise in specialist areas through a conversion course for an honours degree.

What are my career prospects

The foundation degree is designed to meet the needs of industry and graduates will be qualified to work as programmers, IT support services, software and network engineers and database administrators. You may choose to conduct research in operating systems, information retrieval or systems engineering.

Graduates also have the option to develop their expertise further on a conversion course taking their foundation degree up to an honours in a related or specialist area.

How will you help me prepare for my future?

Throughout your time with us we’ll support you on the path to your chosen career. We’ll help you to develop crucial skills, encouraging you to become enterprising, employable and good leaders.

We encourage our students to find work placements and live briefs, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills in a work background. Our modules and teaching expertise will help you become more independent as a learner and more certain of your discipline expertise.
