If you dream of preserving the artistic feats of the past for future generations to appreciate, then you could have the passion that it takes to study our art conservation master’s program . Your love of art and technique will motivate you with the patience and attention to detail necessary for this career path, while a calm temperament is essential to the practice.

It is the combination of technical skill and passion for the arts makes this unique MA perfect for those from both a science-based and arts background.

Integrating a mix of fine art, science and forensic techniques, you will study a range of subjects including studio and work-based practice, conservation theory, science, technical examination, preventive conservation and research training skills.

This Conservation of Fine Art MA is employment specific and provides you with the highly specialised knowledge and techniques which are essential to a career in art conservation.

During years one or two you will have the exciting opportunity to take a placement in the UK or abroad, in order to broaden your cultural perspective and enhance your learning experience. Students have so far gained local, national, and international placements, ranging from; the Bose Museum, the Guild Hall London, the Tate Modern, and the British museum and the Museum of Australia.

While studying our master’s in art conservation, you will be among a unique cohort of students choosing to study for Northumbria University’s Conservation of Fine Art MA, as the only Master of Arts course in the UK that specialises in the conservation of Easel Painting and Works of Art on Paper.

Studying for this two year degree makes for fascinating study and calls for a special kind of person with both scientific and artistic ability. We will expect applications from students with a wide range of academic backgrounds, from either ends of the spectrum. This could be from the creative branches of the arts and humanities to the methodical and detail specific fields of chemistry and physics.

Your Career

This course has been developed to reflect national guidelines and ensure that you graduate with the necessary skills and knowledge to kick-start your career within this profession. There are also many additional opportunities available to further enhance your career edge whilst you study.

Throughout the duration of this course you will develop a portfolio of examples of practical work and displays of your intellectual achievement which will provide a demonstration of your skills and enhance your performance at interviews.

In addition to completing a placement to further enhance your development you may also have the opportunity to present research papers at student symposiums.

We actively encourage you to engage with professional bodies and attend key conferences to allow you to network with professionals who are already working within the profession, and you may also have the opportunity to advantage of our partnership with Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums, whose collection supports a number of activities. Our long standing links with the National Trust, Tate Britain and the estate of Francis Bacon have created exciting projects for our MA and PhD students.

This course will develop your skills and knowledge towards working effectively in the fine art conservation laboratories or conservation jobs across the world.

You may choose to work in galleries or museums, or progress your research to PhD level.
