Course summary

Course Details

This course is ideal if you are interested in how buildings work and how building projects are managed. You will explore three major themes - the nature and role of the construction industry, management in the construction industry, and technology of buildings.

You will also study the legal, financial and economic environments in which the industry operates while enhancing your understanding of the other professions involved in building. You will gain an overview of the whole construction process, including surveying, quantity surveying and architectural technology.

This course offers the opportunity to take a 'sandwich' year - a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you.

The course is accredited by the Chartered Association of Building Engineers.

Course Benefits

You have the option of a placement year in industry to enhance your studies, providing hands-on experience which will be of great use to you in gaining future employment.

Job Prospects

There will always be a need for new buildings. Consequently, there will always be a need for suitably qualified professionals to lead building projects. You will develop many transferable skills on this course but, in the main, you will be prepared to pursue management-level positions in the construction industry, whether you want to work on-site or in office-based roles. As well as working for construction companies, you could also forge a career with organisations that require an understanding of construction, such as housing associations, local authorities, suppliers or consultancies.
