Course summary

Overview

This MA offers the exciting opportunity to study Contemporary Europe, a subject of continued political and intellectual intrigue both in the UK and Europe. This multi-disciplinary master’s programme, which is attached to the Europe and the World Centre and located in the Department of Politics, explores how Europe has been shaped, since the late C19, through interactions with the wider world, and vice versa. The MA aims to equip you with a wide range of skills, combining significant elements of political science, political economy and theory with broader cultural and sociological themes; thus, enabling you to develop skills for deeper understanding and study into the complexity and diversity of European culture and politics.

Employability

Studying Politics develops critical and research skills valued by employers - data collection and analysis, problem-solving, argument and self-expression. Graduates have achieved much success in areas such as broadcasting, journalism, the civil service, government (local, national and European), marketing, public relations and academia.

Career prospects

Student career development is a major interest for the department and we actively encourage you to integrate career planning into your academic studies. This is promoted through individual modules which have strong policy and career relevant aspects, a close relationship with the University’s excellent Careers Service and visits to relevant UK and EU actors in Liverpool, London and Brussels.

Over the course of your studies you will acquire unique analytical, problem-solving, written and verbal presentation, and methodological skills. This broad skill-set increases your employment opportunities as it allows you to market themselves in several areas. For example, a politics degree opens career prospects in these areas:

  • Parliament, e.g. assistant to member of parliament,
  • Government institutions (state or local level), e.g. civil servant or as a diplomat,
  • International Organisations (e.g. UN, NATO, EU).
