The programme offers an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge and research in arts and mental health, with a particular emphasis on theatre and performance. This innovative and unique MSc is for you if you are a recent graduate from any arts discipline or from a mental health related field (psychology, health sciences, social sciences and related areas), as well as professionals working in the fields of applied arts practice, mental health, education, social work and related areas. The programme is jointly run by the Centre for Psychiatry and the Department of Drama.Learn about the application of the creative arts to research, practice, education, advocacy and activism in the field of mental healthStudy the ways in which mental health experiences are represented in the arts and in popular cultureConsider how arts practice can critique and expand both clinical and popular understanding of mental health and the mental health systemLearn how mental health professionals, arts practitioners and others interested in mental health and wellbeing work together in both clinical and non-clinical environmentsDevelop your own area of expertise in the field of the arts and mental health through options of placements and arts practice.What you'll studyThis programme is grounded in both arts and science methodologies and perspectives. Examine mental health theory and practice through a critical approach which establishes the central role of the arts in mental health. Study the history, theory and practice of the arts for mental health promotion, the representation of mental health in the arts, and arts intervention for the prevention and treatment of mental distress (with a focus on theatre and performance).AssessmentYour work will be assessed through:essayspresentationsproject plansproject reportsportfolios of documentation.TeachingYou will learn through a mixture of specialist lectures delivered by academics, clinicians and artists, seminars and group work, practice-based workshops and field visits.
