Course summary

Our specialisms include VR, AR and MR, IoTs, mobile technology, gamification and serious games, user experiences and user interface development.

Postgraduate researchers studying in the areas of Creative Computing and Technology; Technical and Applied Computing and Engineering Technologies will be able to draw on expertise within the school across a wide area. There is a strong applied research focus in the School and particular interests in work that engages with the concerns of the user, the needs of businesses and the rapid developments within the IT industry and engineering sectors. We may also be able to offer you effective supervision for cross-disciplinary projects that link to business management. As a research degree candidate, you will be supported by a supervisory team with expertise in your subject and/or research approach. A research degree will open the door to work in full-time research or teaching, or provide a greater understanding of professional practice.

Due to rapid developments in the field of computer graphics and computer hardware, webbased applications are becoming more and more powerful, and the performance distance between web-based applications and desktop applications is decreasing.

There is rising demand for added and easier access to 3D content on the web. The better the browser experience, the more potential revenue that web-based content can generate. The main focus of this project is on the design, development and implementation of a new 3D generic modelling method based on Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) for web-based applications. While the model is initialised using classical 3D graphics, the scene model is extended using SVG. A new algorithm to present 3D graphics with SVG is proposed.

This includes the definition of a 3D scene in the framework, integration of 3D objects, cameras, transformations, light models and textures in a 3D scene, and the rendering of 3D objects on the web page, allowing the end-user to interactively manipulate objects on the web page.

Research Environment

The school is active in pure and applied research, knowledge transfer and industrial projects. There are a number of dedicated laboratories for researchers. This strong and dynamic background means that postgraduate researchers – whether full-time or part-time – join a group of about 30 research candidates involved in extending both new knowledge and professional practice.

All postgraduate researchers are required to initially take and complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods to support the development of their project and their education as researchers. The university and the school also offer a range of further research training events, postgraduate researcher-led seminars, conferences and summer schools, which will continue your training opportunities throughout your programme. You will also receive updates on opportunities to participate in training offered through other universities and bodies.

This diverse range of events helps to ensure that you gain the skills and confidence you need to underpin your research journey. You are also encouraged to attend national and international academic conferences in the latter stages of your research to present your ideas, and receive feedback at such events. The university and school also foster publication opportunities, where, with the help of your supervisors, you may want to submit journal articles as part of your researcher development.
