Course summary

Kickstart your entrepreneurial journey today with a media-savvy outlook with this hands-on, innovation-driven course.

You will learn what it takes to start your own successful business or turbocharge an existing company, whether it is starting a production company, creative agency or online business, developing a product or service, or using media to widen your influence.

You will be able to take your ideas from the classroom to the real world with practical modules designed to help you execute your goals.

The course is designed to help you substitute current creative projects as coursework. This can include:

• productions you work on as part of a wider team,
• commissions and
• ‘on spec’ blue sky projects.

As a result, you can be flexible with your time spent on the course which allows you to attend University just one day a week during term time. For example, if you are working towards a clearer, more feasible and more profitable business this will be equivalent to participation in the course and will still enable you to receive feedback from experts and colleagues.

Course detail

The course will help you bridge idea and ambition, offering insight and strategy to execute your business plan with flair. You will learn how to set yourself apart in a competitive market and explore market research, Intellectual Property (IP) development, commissioning and delivery.

How you will learn:

  • You will 'bring' your business, projects and associated plans into the course, and your coursework is structured around maximising creative and commercial opportunities
  • You will be encouraged to research outside the University and into your sector, trying out newly gained methods and business knowledge to research the forces that can make your project or business happen.
  • We will drive personal development and business growth through reflective learning. You will do this by experiencing media products, reflecting on your response, comparing the product to others, and planning for a better outcome. This has been particularly successful in unstructured and uncertain environments such as management and healthcare education.

You will be taught by experts from a range of specialist backgrounds who share a passion for media, creativity and entrepreneurship. Alongside lectures, workshops and one-to-one tutorials, our regular talks from high-profile industry speakers will inspire and give you an opportunity to see how knowledge is applied in the industry to lead successful ventures and inspire.

On completion of the course you should have a project portfolio that may include a prototype, business plan and pitch deck ready to be launched or being commissioned. Most importantly, you should emerge a well-rounded and resilient media producer with astute knowledge on how to steer your business onto a path of success.

Study & career progression

When you graduate with your MA Creative Media Entrepreneurship degree you will have the knowledge, experience and confidence to pursue your ambition as an independent production professional.

The skills you will gain on the course are also highly transferable and will appeal to a range of potential employers in creative media production. For example you could work in:

  • television, film and media
  • creative management
  • design
  • advertising, marketing and e-commerce.

Examples of successful media entrepreneurs include Jeffrey Katzenberg of Disney and Dreamworks fame and art director, illustrator and graphic designer Kate Moross.

You may also choose to study for a PhD or an MBA.
