Course summary

Foundation degree in Criminal Justice aims to give students a comprehensive and critical understanding of crime and punishment. It does this by offering students an education to think criminologically, and in doing so, to critically assess the concepts of crime and victim, and societies’ response to crimes and victims, especially that of the criminal justice system (CJS) (e.g., policing, courts, prisons). The FDSc degree is also designed around the seven core themes identified by the sector skills council (Skills for Justice) foundation degree framework; Human Rights values and Ethics: Equality and Diversity: Risk assessment and Management; Effective Service delivery: Communication, Interpersonal Skills: Reflective Practice and Professional Development: Leadership. These are developed across the programme in a simple to complex model and are integrated into the modules. The practical skills that are incorporated throughout the programme in the work based learning module will be underpinned by theoretical knowledge and contextualised to the needs of practice through work-based learning and assessment. The curriculum will combine practice and theory, generic skills/knowledge and specialist skills/knowledge at all stages.
