Course summary

One of the department's most popular combined courses, BA Criminology and Psychology explores the motivations of human behaviour and how the darker side of our nature is dealt with by the criminal justice system. Exploring key theory from both disciplines the course is designed to give well-rounded insights into real-world issues exploring how and why people do what they do.The combined social sciences approach allows for a broader study of society’s reactions to deviant behaviour. Through the course, you will cover a wide range of topics from the motivations of serial killers, to state crimes and miscarriages of justice.Over the first two years, you will gain a solid grounding in criminology and psychology. You will learn about a variety of core theories, perspectives, and fields of study.By studying historical developments in both subjects you will gain insight into the growth and motivation of key institutions over time. This will develop into the exploration of contemporary issues and their historical causes. Developmental, Social, and Forensic Psychology will help build a grounding in human behaviour, as well as an understanding of the legal system and theories of punishment and reform.Throughout this combined course you'll be taught by specialists through a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, and group work. You’ll find this variety of approaches, backed by your own independent study, to be stimulating and challenging as you get to grips with the key concepts of each subject.Our Criminology and Psychology graduates have found work in a wide variety of stimulating roles. Some build their careers in directly related fields while others use the transferable skills they've learned to pursue other opportunities.We place a strong emphasis on preparing you for employment, with a specific employability module in year two geared towards providing you with the best advice on how to prepare for the job market and apply for positions.
