Course summary
Throughout the course, you will build a thorough understanding of the law as it applies to crime and the criminal justice system in England and Wales, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of essential aspects of criminology, including:
knowledge of crime
explanations for why people break the law
the workings of the criminal justice and penal systems in the UK and abroad
the foundations of criminal law
ethics in criminal justice
policing
At the end of your Criminology with Law BA you will take your dissertation module, giving you the opportunity to use your research and analytical skills to produce work that reflects your interests and demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the subject.
In the final stages of your course, you will also be able to choose modules that let you explore particular topics in more depth. In addition to your academic studies, you will have one module dedicated to voluntary work in criminal justice or a related field. Past students have gained their work experience within relevant roles, such as:
youth offending
victim support
crime prevention
witness support
various policing support roles, including as a special constable
These learning opportunities give you real-world experience of what it is like to work in a crime-related field. This hands-on experience can enhance your learning experience and your chances of finding relevant employment after you graduate.
There are many reasons for joining a foundation year course; you may not have the exact subjects or grades at A level to meet the entry requirements, you may have been living abroad or want to change direction with your career. Whatever your starting point, the foundation year offers a firm grounding in the skills and knowledge that you will need to get the most from your studies and thrive at University. Successful completion of the foundation year allows you to progress straight onto Level 4 of this course.
