Course summary
Criminology examines the problem of crime, why people offend and how crime is controlled. This course will prepare you for a career in the criminal justice system or wider human services as you develop both theory and practical skills and understand how to apply them in real-world settings. World-leading research into community safety, offending and youth justice informs this course. This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.
The BA (Hons) Criminology course will allow you to achieve a range of skills and levels of personal enquiry deemed essential in the world of work. On completion of the course you will have the ability to understand and have knowledge of the broader context of the discipline of Criminology. This, and the ability to apply knowledge and skills, together with the collaborative approach adopted in the learning and the ability to make sound judgements, will equip you with the qualities and skills necessary for employment.
You will be encouraged to take advantage of the many volunteering opportunities related to the discipline, so acquiring work related experience to enhance your CV. Career destinations for graduates are varied but include Youth Justice and National Offender Management Service (NOMS) organisations including the private sector contributing to the Government’s Transforming Rehabilitation agenda. In addition, Local and Central Government provide a range of opportunities as do the various charity organisations committed to work with offenders.
