Course summary

This full-time course is open to Home/EU and international students.

This course uniquely provides in-depth training in the acquisition and use of 3D data, with a particular leaning toward clinical dental application.

Your research project is the largest component of the course and gives you the opportunity to develop your own ideas (supported by our technical development team) and assess their efficacy. Technical support will be provided to enable the development of new software, enabling you the unique opportunity to design and shape the application of digital technology in your chosen field.

Perhaps you have an idea for using 3D printing in dentistry, or maybe you’re interested in an augmented reality, facial scanning or another machine learning project. All these ideas and more can be accommodated with the support of our team. This is your chance to shape the future of dentistry.

On completing this course you will have a deep understanding of 3D data, CAD/CAM manufacturing and modern materials, all within the digital dental context. You will also understand the research process and peer-reviewed publication is encouraged

Topics covered include: 3D scanning and printing, CAD/CAM and modern digital clinical workflows.

Learning and teaching

This course is delivered through a combination of intensive block teaching at the University of Leeds (consisting of seminars, group work and practical work), and self-directed reading.

For the research project you will be allocated an experienced personal mentor from our academic staff. You will also have access to a software developer to help with any novel ideas that you may wish to employ or evaluate in your research.

You will be assessed through a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the course. These include:

  • evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within digital dentistry
  • demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to this specialist area
  • drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study
  • evaluating and criticising received opinion
  • making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitation on judgements made in the absence of complete data

Career opportunities

This unique course will help you develop your skills and understanding in research to an advanced level in the rapidly growing field of digital dentistry. These higher level skills will be invaluable for assessing new technologies within your chosen area of digital dentistry. The course will provide the skills which are needed to adopt the latest technology wisely into your dental practice or laboratory, or to use your new skills to further an academic career in one of the facets of digital dentistry.
